HERE ARE 8 SIMPLE STEPS TO STARTING A BLOG

1. Prepare.

Building a blog is really as simple as creating a word document. But it is very important to learn a few things about a blog before creating it, though.

  • You will need a name. People will want to know what your blog represents.
  • You will need a brand. People should recognize you when they see your posts on social media or on other blogs.
  • You will need a color scheme and a few good fonts. You want your blog to represent you and look good to attract your ideal readers.
  • You will need something to write about. What are you interested in telling others about or learning yourself and then sharing with the world?  These are the types of thing you can put on your blog?
  • You will need to promote it. Find some groups, blogs and other sites where you can spread the word about your amazing new website.
  • You will want to monetize. Of course, this is optional, but bringing in even a few dollars to pay for your hosting fees would be great, eh?  And it is much easier than you probably think.

2. Choose a platform.

Starting a blog comes with numerous decisions to make, yes.

But once you figure out the small details you can get down to setting your blog in motion.

First you will want to consider where you want to house your blog.

Sure, you could go the FREE route and use Blogger.com, but if your blog outgrows that platform and you have to move it later, it can be a pain. (I know, I have done it a few times over the years).

You could also use Squarespace.com (Megan Mimms has a great course on how to use it and she currently offers it for FREE).

There are several other options for platforms to get your blog rolling, but I recommend WordPress.org. Once you decide which platform you will use, then you are ready to move on to choosing a domain name.

Why is WordPress the best blogging platform?

  • It is perfect for beginners.
  • It is user friendly.
  • It is a FREE software that is easily installed through your web host.
  • Consist of hundreds of themes to choose from.
  • No programming or coding required.

3. Choose a Domain Name.

Choosing a good domain name is crucial for a successful blog. Remember it is very cumbersome and time consuming to change your domain later, so your name should be something you can live with for many, many years.

Tips for choosing the best Domain Name for your blog.

  • Use a .com. extension if you have that option. There are a number of domain name extensions available today, however, the .com extension is the most popular and easiest to remember.
  • Keep it short and brief. It is best to use a short domain name, since it will be easier to remember. A good domain name should be no more than 15 characters.
  • Try to use keywords. A keyword tells the search engines and your potential readers, what your website is all about.
  • Be creative. Coming up with a domain that is not already in use may seem like a daunting task, but be patient and you will find something. Go to GoDaddy to check availability on your potential name. Be careful that it does not spell something weird like the folks at Pen Island did. Check this link for even more awful website names to watch out for.
  • Consider pronunciation. Choose a domain name that is easy to pronounce and spell for your readers. Try to avoid using numbers instead of letters and abbreviations for words that may not be easy to remember etc.
  • Make it special. A unique domain name will stand out in the search engines. Check on your competitor’s domain names as well, prior to selecting your own name to make sure you will stand out even more.
  • Don’t use hyphens or double letters. Hyphens are usually associated with spam signs and are typically left out when readers type a name in the address line. Double letters increase your chances of losing traffic due to typos, so avoid those as well.

Does my web host really matter that much?

4. Find a Web Host.

Choosing your host is crucial for a good blogging experience.  I HIGHLY recommend SiteGround to all my newbie bloggers.  Why? Well because they:

  • Have 24/7 support services
  • Are New User Friendly
  • Have a one click WordPress installation.
  • Give you a FREE domain name.

You can choose any web host that you are comfortable with, but be sure to check reviews and see what others say about the service before you decide.

5. Customize your blog.

Now that you have a domain name, web hosting and have installed WordPress on your site, setting up your blog gets really fun.

You get to add color, fonts, plugins and many other personal elements to your site.

You will need to get familiar with your blog’s features like; the menu, the dashboard, adding a post, adding media and pages, creating links, approving comments, as well as your blog’s theme, and settings.

You can edit your settings and appearance very easily through the dashboard. You can watch this video to walk your through it. (link coming soon)

6. Add some content.

So you have built a beautiful eye catching site and now you need to add a post or two so people can see what you are all about.

Make a list of a few topics that you can write about to get some content on your site. You don’t want people stopping by with nothing to read. It is a good idea to come up with at least 15 topics. Check out this post OR this one for some ideas to get you started.

Learning some basic SEO knowledge and adding some keywords to your post will help generate some traffic.

7. Bring on the traffic.

Now that you have your first post up, you want to get some readers to your site to read your wonderful content.

How do I open the flood gates to my blog - you say? Why are they not just knocking down my door? I wrote a killer blog post, hit publish, now what?

You need to do some promotion, my friend.

They don’t know about you, just yet.

You must spread the word. Shout it from the rooftops. Tell your friends, family, your neighbors, your doctor, your veterinarian, the lady at the grocery store…anyone that will listen…tell the world about your magnificent new blog post.

"Okay, ok.. I got it…but how???"
